Homework Club Evaluation
ARA homework clubs are one of ARA’s most effective and enduring initiatives. They offer free tutoring in a group environment, providing not only academic assistance, but also opportunities for informal support and friendship. The research conducted by Christabel Ballard found that ARA’s homework clubs are rewarding for students and their volunteer tutors. It concluded that the program is successful in attaining its goals of improved study outcomes and the improvement of the overall high school experience. The homework clubs also help to cultivate positive social relationships.
The report includes quotes from students. One says that the homework club is, "...helping me to understand assignments I find difficult to understand." Another highlights the broader benefits of the program saying, "it helped me to have resilience and responsibility."
The report also offered some recommendations, noting in particular that some sessions are becoming extremely popular and extra sessions might be required.
